Nesbitt, Lauwers: Senate Dems Green New Deal is bad deal for Michiganders

LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, on Thursday released the following statement as the Senate Committee on Energy and Environment considered a series of Democrat-sponsored bills designed to drastically change Michigan’s energy policy:

“Radical ideology is no way to govern; this short-sighted push now being unveiled in the Senate at the direction of our governor and other far-left Democrats to force an extreme California-style Green New Deal upon the people of Michigan is a bad deal for everyone.

“This extreme approach to energy policy will create burdensome mandates, drive up energy costs for residents across our state and threaten the stability of our electric grid. Michiganders cannot afford these kinds of severe policy shifts and do not need the heavy hand of government telling them when it is permissible to turn on their air conditioning or use a stove.

“Responsible energy policy must pursue an all-of-the-above approach that utilizes existing and reliable sources — including natural gas and nuclear energy — while continuing to build up a renewable grid for the future. It is possible to be both environmentally conscious and help lower costs for families, seniors, and small businesses; and this should be our goal in the Legislature.”
